Our Best 6 Days Zanzibar Holiday Excursion - Overview

Zanzibar is far more than a beach destination — Tanzania's island paradise offers one of the most concentrated and diverse collections of experiences in the Indian Ocean, and our 6 Days Zanzibar Holiday Excursion covers all of it. The package combines Zanzibar's five signature excursions — the Stone Town walking tour, the Kizimkazi dolphin swim, the Jozani Forest red colobus monkey tour, the Prison Island giant tortoise visit, and the traditional spice farm tour — each guided by local experts, with three full days of unscheduled beach time at your chosen Zanzibar beach hotel. This 6-day format is designed for travellers who want to experience Zanzibar properly — not just beach time and a sunset dhow cruise, but the full cultural, wildlife, and marine story of an island that sat at the centre of Indian Ocean trade for a thousand years — with Generous African Tours handling all excursion logistics, transfers, and guide arrangements so you simply arrive and let Zanzibar do the rest.

6 Days Zanzibar Holiday Excursion - Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival & Stone Town Walking Tour

Meals: NoneHalf Day TourWalking TourUNESCO Heritage

Zanzibar Airport Arrival & Stone Town Orientation. Your guide or driver meets you at Zanzibar International Airport or the Stone Town ferry terminal and transfers you to your accommodation. After settling in, the afternoon begins with a Stone Town guided walking tour through the medina's narrow coral-stone alleyways, taking in the Old Arab Fort, the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum, and the Slave Market & Christ Church Cathedral site, where the history of the East African slave trade is told with unflinching honesty.

The tour ends at Darajani Market — spices, tropical fruit, fresh fish, and Stone Town's daily commerce — before returning to your accommodation. Your guide's dinner recommendation: the Forodhani Gardens night food market on the waterfront, for fresh Zanzibar seafood, sugar cane juice, and the evening dhow harbour at its best.

Day 2

Dolphin Swim at Kizimkazi & Spice Farm Tour

Morning MarineAfternoon CulturalMeals: None

Morning — Kizimkazi Dolphin Swim. Early departure for the south of the island and the fishing village of Kizimkazi, where resident pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins inhabit the warm Indian Ocean channel. Your boat crew locates the pod using generational knowledge of the channel's tides, and once found, you enter the water gently with mask and fins as the dolphins move around you with the grace of wild cetaceans completely at ease in their element. Coral reef snorkeling follows at a nearby site before the boat returns to Kizimkazi beach.

Afternoon — Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour. Drive through the island's interior to a traditional spice plantation — the gardens that made Zanzibar the Spice Island and the most economically important trading post on the East African coast for two centuries. Your guide introduces cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, lemongrass, and turmeric growing in their natural form, teaching you to identify them by sight, smell, and taste before a traditional Zanzibari lunch is served in the garden.

Day 3

Jozani Forest & Prison Island

Morning WildlifeMeals: NoneAfternoon Marine

Morning — Jozani Forest Red Colobus Monkey Tour. Drive south to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park — Zanzibar's only national park and the last significant remnant of the island's ancient indigenous forest. The Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth, inhabits the forest in habituated troops that approach remarkably close on the guided trail, and your guide explains the conservation success story that brought the colobus back from near-extinction, along with the forest's endemic plants and mangrove boardwalk ecosystem.

Afternoon — Prison Island Excursion. Boat transfer from Stone Town harbour to Changuu Island — known as Prison Island for its historical use as a quarantine station and an intended (but never used) slave prison. Its most famous residents today are the Aldabra giant tortoises, some over 100 years old with ages confirmed by British colonial records; you walk among them freely, feed them by hand, and snorkel the clear water off the island's coral reef before returning to Stone Town in the late afternoon.

Day 4-6

Days 4, 5 & 6 — Beach Days at Your Chosen Zanzibar Beach Hotel

Meals: Hotel BasisFree TimeBeach & Relaxation

Days 4, 5 & 6 — Zanzibar Beach Time. Three days of complete freedom on Zanzibar's white-coral sand beaches at your chosen beach hotel. Generous African Tours works with properties across all of Zanzibar's beach zones — the calm, shallow west coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) for year-round swimming, the east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu) for kitesurfing and dramatic low-tide sandbanks, and the north coast (Nungwi, Matemwe) for the finest shore-accessible snorkeling reefs.

Activities available during beach days include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, deep-sea fishing, sunset dhow cruises, kitesurfing lessons, and additional snorkeling or diving excursions arranged through your beach hotel. The pace of these three days is entirely yours — unhurried, unscheduled, and full of the particular magic of a Zanzibar beach afternoon when the tide is low and the Indian Ocean light turns everything gold.

You can easily travel to Zanzibar either via a 20-minute flight from Dar es Salaam or Arusha to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), or via a 2-hour passenger ferry from the Dar es Salaam harbor.
