Jozani Forest Tour Zanzibar - Overview
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is Zanzibar's only national park and the last significant remnant of the ancient indigenous forest that once covered the island. Its most celebrated residents are the Zanzibar red colobus monkeys — a species found nowhere else on earth — which move freely through the forest canopy and regularly come within metres of visitors on the guided forest trail.
The Jozani Forest tour takes approximately 3–4 hours and combines a guided forest walk with a mangrove boardwalk over the tidal creek system of Chwaka Bay. Your guide introduces you to the red colobus troops — which number around 50–60 individuals in the park core — explains the forest's endemic plant species, and walks you along the elevated mangrove trail through one of the Indian Ocean coast's most intact tidal forest systems.
This tour is ideal as a morning or afternoon excursion from any Zanzibar beach hotel, combining well with a Stone Town tour, Prison Island trip, or Zanzibar spice tour in the same day. It is genuinely one of the most rewarding wildlife encounters available on the island.

Hotel pickup from your Zanzibar accommodation (timing flexible — morning or afternoon departure). Drive south through Zanzibar's spice farms and rural villages to Jozani Forest. Meet your park guide at the entrance and begin the forest trail. Within minutes, the red colobus troops are typically visible — these monkeys are habituated to visitors and remarkably relaxed at close range, making photography easy. Your guide explains the forest ecology, points out endemic plant species, and tells the story of the conservation programme that brought the red colobus back from near-extinction. The tour continues to the mangrove boardwalk — an elevated wooden path through the tidal mangrove system — before returning to the entrance for your hotel transfer.
