Your Mikumi adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Dar es Salaam. Settle in for the scenic drive west, leaving the coastal city behind as the landscape transitions into rolling Tanzanian countryside.

Stop in Morogoro (07:30 – 08:00 AM)
Along the way, your driver-guide will stop in the bustling market town of Morogoro, nestled at the base of the Uluguru Mountains. This is a great opportunity to stretch your legs, grab a coffee, browse local stalls for souvenirs, and get a genuine taste of everyday Tanzanian life away from the tourist trail.

Arrival at Mikumi National Park (09:30 – 10:00 AM)
Continuing along the A7 highway, you'll arrive at Mikumi National Park — Tanzania's fourth-largest park, covering 3,230 km² between the Uluguru, Rubeho, and Lumango mountain ranges. After completing park formalities, you'll meet your experienced safari guide and head straight into your first game drive of the day.

Morning Game Drive — Mkata Floodplain (10:00 AM – 12:30 PM)
Cruise through the open plains of the Mkata Floodplain, Mikumi's premier game-viewing area. This is where you're most likely to spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and wildebeest grazing against a backdrop of acacia and baobab trees. Keep an eye on the riverbanks for lions resting in the shade, and scan the skies and treetops for some of the park's 400+ recorded bird species, including the striking lilac-breasted roller.

Picnic Lunch in the Park (12:30 – 13:30 PM)
Stop at a scenic, designated picnic site within the park for a relaxing packed lunch surrounded by the sounds of the African bush — a perfect midday break before the afternoon's wildlife viewing continues.

Afternoon Game Drive — Hippo Pools & Beyond (13:30 – 15:30 PM)
Continue your game drive toward Mikumi's famous hippo pools, where hippos and crocodiles gather alongside flocks of openbilled storks and other waterbirds. This stretch of the park also offers good opportunities to spot leopards, spotted hyenas, and — for the truly fortunate — the elusive African wild dog.

Return to Dar es Salaam (16:00 PM onwards)
As the afternoon draws to a close, begin the scenic drive back toward Dar es Salaam, arriving at your hotel in the evening, tired but full of unforgettable memories from a single, extraordinary day of Tanzanian wildlife.
