Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
11km ยท 5-6 hrs ยท Meals: L, D
Trek begins at Machame Gate (1,800m) with park registration and a briefing from your guide. The trail winds through dense montane rainforest, home to colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy and towering podocarpus trees. The humid forest floor is often muddy, and you'll gain 1,200m over 5-7 hours of walking. Arriving at Machame Camp (3,000m), the crew has already set up tents and the mess tent. This is your first night at altitude, and your guide will monitor everyone for signs of altitude sickness. Dinner is served in the mess tent before an early night to rest for the days ahead.
๐ฅ HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SUMMIT DAY
Day 2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
5km ยท 4-5 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
A steady climb out of the forest into heather and moorland, with the terrain opening up dramatically. Giant groundsel and lobelia plants appear as you ascend, offering your first clear views of Kibo's summit dome ahead. The hike to Shira Camp (3,840m) takes 5-6 hours with 840m of elevation gain. Camp is pitched on the edge of the Shira Plateau, a vast volcanic plain with sweeping views. The sunset here is spectacular, with Kibo glowing orange as the sun dips behind the horizon. This is an important acclimatization day as you cross 3,500m for the first time.
Day 3
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
10km ยท 6-7 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
The trail rises to the Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization before descending into the lush Barranco Valley (3,900m), following the "climb high, sleep low" principle. The climb to Lava Tower takes 3-4 hours through increasingly barren landscape where the thin air is noticeable. After a brief rest at the tower, you descend into the greener Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering senecio plants. Total hiking time is 6-7 hours with significant altitude variation that helps your body adjust. Barranco Camp is one of the most scenic on the mountain, nestled below the dramatic Barranco Wall.
Day 4
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
13km ยท 7-8 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
The morning's Barranco Wall scramble is the route's technical highlight โ hands-on-rock for about an hour, though no ropes or technical skills are needed. Your guides assist you step by step. After the wall, the trail rolls across several ridgelines with stunning views before the long traverse through the Karanga Valley directly to Barafu Camp (4,640m). This compressed step is what shortens the itinerary to 6 days. The hike is 7-8 hours today, making it one of the longer days. Barafu Camp is barren and exposed, positioned for the summit push. Dinner is early, and you'll try to sleep before the midnight wake-up.

Day 5
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
17km ยท 11-15 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
A midnight departure under headlamp for the summit push. The ascent to Stella Point (5,685m) takes 6-7 hours of slow, steady climbing in the dark. Reaching the crater rim is an emotional moment. From Stella Point, it's another hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) โ Africa's highest point. The sunrise from the summit is unforgettable, with glaciers glowing gold and the curvature of the earth visible. After celebration and photos, the long descent begins โ past Barafu and down to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Total hiking time is 12-14 hours, making this the most demanding day of the climb.
Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
10km ยท 3-4 hrs ยท Meals: B, L
A final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where certificates are issued before transfer back to your hotel. The 3-4 hour walk is a celebration as you return to lush vegetation and lower altitude. At the gate, you'll receive your official Kilimanjaro National Park certificate โ a tangible reminder of your achievement. A vehicle transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower and proper bed await. The sense of accomplishment is immense, and most climbers spend the evening recounting highlights from the week with their trekking mates.

It's the minimum recommended duration for Machame โ doable for fit climbers, but the 7-day version offers meaningfully better acclimatization and success rates.
FAQ
How difficult is the Barranco Wall?
It's a scramble rather than technical climbing โ hands are used for balance but no climbing gear is required.
FAQ
What's the summit success rate on this route?
Moderate to high, generally lower than the 7-day Machame due to the compressed acclimatization schedule.
FAQ
Can I upgrade to the 7-day itinerary?
Yes, ask about our standard Machame 7-day route for improved altitude adjustment.
