What happens each day of the tour?

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

8km ยท 3-4 hrs ยท Meals: L, D
A gentle rainforest walk from Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m), the first of the route's hut camps. The 3-4 hour hike covers 840m of elevation gain through dense montane forest where colobus monkeys are commonly spotted. The trail is well-maintained and relatively gentle, making for a pleasant introduction to the climb. Mandara Hut features A-frame bunk buildings with mattresses, and a communal dining hut where your crew prepares dinner. This is your first night at altitude, and your guide will monitor everyone for signs of altitude sickness.
๐Ÿ”ฅ HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SUMMIT DAY
Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

12km ยท 5-6 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
The trail leaves the forest for open moorland, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, arriving at Horombo Hut (3,720m). The 5-6 hour hike covers 1,020m of elevation gain as the landscape transforms dramatically. Heather and giant groundsel replace the trees, and the views of both of Kilimanjaro's peaks are spectacular. Horombo Hut is a larger complex with multiple dormitory blocks and communal dining facilities. This is your first night above 3,500m, and the acclimatization day tomorrow will help your body adjust.
Day 3

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

5km ยท 3-4 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
A rest day at Horombo with an optional acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi, returning to sleep in the same hut. This is the key advantage of the 6-day Marangu over the 5-day version โ€” a full day at altitude to help your body adjust. The optional hike climbs to around 4,000m before returning to sleep at 3,720m, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle. The afternoon is spent resting and hydrating in the hut. This extra day significantly improves summit success rates.
Day 4

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

10km ยท 5-6 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
The trail crosses the "saddle," a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo, reaching Kibo Hut (4,700m) for a short rest before the summit attempt. The 5-6 hour hike covers 980m of elevation gain across barren, rocky terrain with little vegetation. The saddle is a stark lunar landscape with dramatic views of both peaks. Kibo Hut is basic stone accommodation at 4,700m, used the night before the summit push. Dinner is served early around 5:00 PM, and most climbers try to sleep by 7:00 PM before the midnight wake-up.
๐Ÿ”ฅ HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SUMMIT DAY
Day 5

Kibo Hutch to Summit to Horombo Hut

20km ยท 12-14 hrs ยท Meals: B, L, D
A midnight ascent via Gilman's Point and Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then a long descent back down to Horombo Hut. The ascent under headlamp takes 6-8 hours to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then another 1-2 hours to Uhuru Peak โ€” Africa's highest point. The sunrise from the summit is unforgettable. After celebration and photos, the long descent begins back to Horombo Hut. Total hiking time is 12-14 hours, making this the most demanding day. Returning to Horombo Hut at lower altitude helps recovery.
Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

18km ยท 5-6 hrs ยท Meals: B, L
The final descent retraces the ascent route through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate, where certificates are issued. The 5-6 hour walk covers 1,860m of descent as you return through the same landscape you climbed on day 2, then back into the rainforest. At Marangu Gate, you'll receive your official Kilimanjaro National Park certificate. A vehicle transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower and proper bed await. The sense of accomplishment is immense.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ

What makes Marangu different from other Kilimanjaro routes?

It's the only route with hut accommodation instead of tents, and it uses the same path for both ascent and descent.
FAQ

Is 6 days better than 5 days on Marangu?

Yes โ€” the added acclimatization day at Horombo meaningfully improves summit success compared to the 5-day version.
FAQ

Are the huts private?

No, huts are shared bunk-style dormitories, typically with climbers grouped by trekking party where possible.
FAQ

Is Marangu easier than Machame?

The gradient is gentler, but the same-path ascent/descent means less scenic variety, and summit success is generally lower than longer circuit routes.
