7 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb | Hut to Summit. — Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Moshi — Pre-Climb Briefing & Gear Check
Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport — private transfer to your Moshi hotel. Full pre-climb briefing covers the 7-day Marangu route itinerary, gear check, altitude management, and the summit night procedure. Rest well: the climb begins tomorrow.
Marangu Gate (1,870m) to Mandara Hut (2,720m)
Drive 45 minutes to Marangu Gate (1,870m). Enter Kilimanjaro's lush montane rainforest — moss-draped trees, giant ferns, blue monkeys, and birdsong. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720m). Optional afternoon walk to Maundi Crater viewpoint before dinner.
Mandara Hut (2,720m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Exit the rainforest into heath and moorland — giant lobelias, groundsels, and your first dramatic views of both Kibo summit and Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m). The altitude is significant — hydrate consistently and walk slowly.
First Acclimatization Day — Zebra Rocks Hike
First dedicated acclimatization day — guided hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020m) and Mawenzi views. "Climb high, sleep low" principle applied. Afternoon rest at Horombo. This day and tomorrow are the 7-day route's defining advantage over shorter itineraries — your summit is being built here.
Second Acclimatization Day — Extended Altitude Training
Second acclimatization day — longer altitude hike pushing to 4,200m above Horombo toward the saddle approach. This second "climb high, sleep low" session is exclusive to the 7-day Marangu itinerary and delivers the physiological preparation that drives the route's 90%+ summit success rate. Rest well this afternoon — tomorrow is Kibo Hut.
Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m) — Summit Night
Cross the alpine desert saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi to Kibo Hut (4,700m). Early dinner, full cold-weather gear layers, and rest before midnight wake-up. Temperatures below -10°C. Your 7 days of preparation arrive tonight.
Summit Night — Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Descent to Moshi
Wake at midnight. Ascend through darkness and cold on the Marangu summit trail — past Hans Meyer Cave (5,220m) to Gillman's Point (5,681m) at dawn, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The Roof of Africa. Descend all the way to Marangu Gate for your TANAPA Summit Certificate, then transfer to Moshi for dinner and celebration.
