Long Rains:April – May, lowest rates of the year
Short Rains:November – December, green and quiet

Overview

Dry Season: June to October

This is Tanzania's most popular window, and for good reason. With little rainfall, vegetation thins out and animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes, making sightings easier and more predictable. This period also overlaps with the dramatic Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti from July through October. Expect clear skies, cooler mornings and evenings, and the highest lodge rates and occupancy of the year.

Calving Season: January to March

The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area turn into a maternity ward for over 500,000 wildebeest calves born within a few short weeks. This concentration of newborns draws heavy predator activity, making it one of the best windows for big cat sightings. Rates are moderate, and the short grass plains offer wide-open, uncluttered game viewing.

Long Rains: April and May

Tanzania's quietest and cheapest travel window. Afternoon downpours are common, roads can get muddy, and some camps close temporarily. But the landscape turns lush and green, birdlife is exceptional, and you'll often have entire sections of the parks to yourself. This suits travelers prioritizing value and solitude over guaranteed dry-season sightings.

Short Rains: November and December

Brief, often just an hour of rain a day, followed by clear skies. The herds begin moving back south toward Ndutu ahead of calving season, and the parks are noticeably greener than peak dry season without the crowds of July through October. This is an underrated shoulder season for travelers who want good weather without peak pricing.

Matching Season to Your Priorities

If river crossings are the goal, aim for July through October. If newborn animals and predator action matter most, January through March. If budget and solitude come first, April and May deliver excellent value. There's no single "best" month — only the best month for what you specifically want to see.

Zanzibar Timing Considerations

If you're combining your safari with Zanzibar, note that the island's rainy season roughly mirrors the mainland's long rains in April and May. Pairing a dry-season safari with a Zanzibar beach stay from June through October, or a calving-season safari with an early-year beach stay, tends to work best.
