Your Tanzania Trip Planner: 1. Where → 2. When → 3. How many days → 4. What experience → 5. Budget

Time is the biggest limit on any trip. Tanzania is huge, and some parks are a full day apart by road. The good news is that every length from one day to two weeks has a good version. This page shows what each one looks like, so you do not try to fit seven days of plans into four.

Quick Answer: 4 days is the shortest trip that feels worthwhile (Ngorongoro and Tarangire). 5–7 days is the sweet spot for a first trip (add the Serengeti). 10–14 days lets you add Zanzibar, a southern park, or Kilimanjaro. If you only have 1–2 days, do Arusha National Park or Tarangire as a day trip.

Quick Comparison: What Each Length Gets You

Where These Routes Run

Use the map above. Almost every route starts in Arusha and loops through the northern parks. The Serengeti is the farthest, about 320 km and 6–8 hours by road, or 1–1.5 hours by plane.

Before You Choose: The Travel-Time Reality

LegRoad time
JRO airport → Arusha45–60 min
Arusha → Tarangire2–3 h
Arusha → Lake Manyara2–2.5 h
Arusha → Ngorongoro3–4 h
Ngorongoro → Serengeti (Seronera)3–4 h
Arusha → Serengeti (Seronera)6–8 h

On a short trip, travel days use up your time. See our transport guide.

1 Day: A Taste

  • Arusha National Park: giraffe, colobus monkeys and a walking option, close to town.
  • Tarangire: elephants and baobabs, a long day but rewarding.
  • Cultural or coffee day: Materuni Falls, a Maasai visit, or Lake Eyasi.

2–3 Days: Quick Break

  • 2 days: Tarangire and Manyara, a short drive from Arusha.
  • 3 days: Serengeti and Ngorongoro by fly-in, or Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro by road.
  • Expect to see a lot, but with little rest time.

4 Days: The Shortest Real Safari

Sample route: Day 1: Arusha → Ngorongoro rim. Day 2: crater floor game drive. Day 3: to Tarangire for an afternoon drive. Day 4: morning drive and return to Arusha.

Two very different landscapes, short drives, and a very good chance at lion, elephant and buffalo. Black rhino is possible at the crater but never guaranteed. See our 4-day Ngorongoro and Tarangire safari.

5 Days: The First-Timer's Circuit

Sample route: Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire. Day 2: Tarangire → Ngorongoro rim. Day 3: crater floor. Day 4: to the Serengeti. Day 5: morning drive, then return to Arusha or fly out.

Three parks, one tight loop. The Serengeti gets only about a day and a half, so many guests fly one leg to gain time. See our 5-day Big Five safari.

7 Days: The Sweet Spot

Sample route: Arusha → Tarangire → Manyara or Karatu → Ngorongoro → Serengeti (two nights) → return. Or swap two Serengeti days for Zanzibar.

Seven days gives you time to slow down, spend two nights in the Serengeti, and add a cultural stop. It is also the best length for adding a balloon ride.

10 Days: Safari Plus

  • Full northern circuit (6–7 days) plus 3–4 days on Zanzibar.
  • Or northern circuit plus Lake Eyasi, Maasai and coffee days.
  • Or a Kilimanjaro climb (7 days) plus a short safari afterward.

14 Days: The Grand Tour

  • Northern circuit (6–7 days), a southern or western park (3–4 days), and Zanzibar (3–4 days).
  • Or Kilimanjaro, then safari, then beach.

See our 14-day Grand Tour.

What Each Trip Length Costs (Indicative)

These totals multiply our per-person daily bands by the number of days. They are guides only, because real packages vary with season, route and group size.

DaysEntry ($350–420/day)Midrange ($420–600/day)Luxury ($600–1,200+/day)
3$1,050–1,260$1,260–1,800$1,800–3,600+
4$1,400–1,680$1,680–2,400$2,400–4,800+
5$1,750–2,100$2,100–3,000$3,000–6,000+
7$2,450–2,940$2,940–4,200$4,200–8,400+
10$3,500–4,200$4,200–6,000$6,000–12,000+
14$4,900–5,880$5,880–8,400$8,400–16,800+

Per person. International flights, tips and insurance are extra. Zanzibar days are priced lower (about $250–550 per day). See Page 5 for details.

Climate: How Season Affects Trip Length

  • Dry season: long game drives are comfortable, and you can fit more in each day.
  • Rainy season: roads slow down, so add a day or choose fewer parks.
  • Hot months (Dec–Feb): drives start early and rest in the middle of the day.

See Page 2 for timing.

Wildlife: How Many Days Improves Your Odds

  • Spending two nights or more in the Serengeti gives you more chances at leopard and cats on the hunt.
  • A full day at the crater is enough for most guests.
  • Repeat game drives at dawn and dusk raise your chances more than adding another park.

No sighting is guaranteed, and more time simply gives more chances.

Best Destinations Within Tanzania, by Trip Length

3–4Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara
5–7Add the Serengeti
8–10Add Zanzibar or Lake Eyasi
10–14Add Ruaha, Nyerere, Mahale or Kilimanjaro

Activities by Trip Length

  • Any trip: game drives, a cultural visit, a coffee tour.
  • 5+ days: add a balloon ride or a walking safari.
  • 7+ days: add a Zanzibar stay or two nights at a mobile camp.
  • 10+ days: add a Kilimanjaro or Meru climb, or chimp trekking.

Safety and Planning Tips

  • Do not stack parks on a short trip. Fewer parks with more time each is better.
  • Keep one buffer day at the end for flight delays.
  • If you climb Kilimanjaro, do the safari after, when your legs are rested.
  • Check entry rules before you finalize flights.

Cuisine on the Road

Longer routes mean more lodge meals and packed lunches. Tell us about dietary needs at booking. On trips of 7 days or more, add a local food stop such as a market or cooking class. See our Food & Culture guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?
At least 4. Most first-timers are happiest with 5–7 days.
Can I do a safari in 3 days?
Yes, but it is quick. A fly-in to the Serengeti, or a short road trip to Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro.
Is 7 days enough for Tanzania?
Yes. Seven days covers the northern circuit comfortably, or a shorter safari plus Zanzibar.
How long should I spend in the Serengeti?
Two nights at least. Three or more is better if you love big cats or want to follow the migration.
How many days for safari plus Zanzibar?
Plan 9–10 days: about 6 for safari and 3–4 on the island.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari?
Yes, in about 12–14 days. Do the climb first, then the safari.
How many days for Kilimanjaro?
Usually 6–8 days on the mountain. Longer routes improve your chance of reaching the summit.
What if I only have one day?
Arusha National Park or a Tarangire day trip. Both are easy from Arusha.
