East Africa Travel Guide: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda Compared

Safari Guides

East Africa gives you four countries, each with its own gift. Tanzania has vast wild plains and the migration. Kenya has the Maasai Mara and easy flights. Uganda has gorillas, chimps and the source of the Nile. Rwanda has a tidy, calm gorilla trip in a small country. This guide compares them fairly, so you can pick the right one, or the right mix.

Quick Answer: Choose Tanzania for big, quieter parks, the Serengeti migration, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. Choose Kenya for the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and a short, easy first trip. Choose Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking. Choose Rwanda if you want gorillas in a short, polished trip, and Uganda for more variety and a lower permit price. Many travelers combine Tanzania with one gorilla country.

Where They Sit: The Map

Use the map above to see how close these countries are. Arusha in Tanzania sits near the Kenyan border, which makes a Kenya and Tanzania trip easy by road or air. Rwanda and Uganda lie further west, usually reached by a short flight.

Tanzania vs Kenya

This is the classic East Africa question. The two countries share the same ecosystem. The Serengeti in Tanzania becomes the Maasai Mara in Kenya, and the migration crosses between them. Both are excellent. They feel different.

FactorTanzaniaKenya
Park size and feelHuge, open, often quietSmaller, wildlife-dense, busier in peak months

StandoutNgorongoro Crater, Serengeti calving, RuahaMara river crossings, Amboseli elephants with Kilimanjaro views

Tanzania vs Kenya Safari: The Short Verdict

  • Want quiet and scale? Tanzania.
  • Want a short trip with very dense wildlife? Kenya's Mara.
  • Want both? A Kenya and Tanzania combo follows the migration across the border. See our full Tanzania vs Kenya guide.

Tanzania vs Uganda (Wildlife)

These two feel like different holidays. Tanzania is about open savannah and big herds. Uganda is about forest, primates and water.

Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Trekking

Both countries protect the mountain gorillas, an endangered species with just over a thousand left in the wild. The trek feels similar: a guided hike, then up to an hour with a gorilla family. What differs is cost, effort, access and what else you do.

Permit Prices (Foreign Non-Resident, USD)

Rwanda (all year)$1,500
Uganda (standard)$800
Uganda (low season: Apr, May, Nov)$600

Prices reflect figures checked in October 2026 and can change. Confirm with the national park authorities before you book. Uganda now requires full payment at booking.

The honest rule of thumb: pick Rwanda if time and comfort matter most. Pick Uganda if budget and variety matter most. Both give a life-changing hour. Neither can guarantee a sighting, though gorilla families are habituated and found on most treks. Gorilla permits sell out in peak months, so book early.

Safety: What to Know in Each Country

All four countries welcome millions of visitors. Safari areas are well run, and guides follow strict routines. Common-sense steps apply everywhere.

  • Check your government's current travel advice before you book. Advice changes, and some border regions carry warnings.
  • Buy travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover.
  • See a travel-health clinic about malaria prevention and vaccinations. Yellow fever rules vary by route.
  • In cities, use hotel-arranged transport at night and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Gorilla treks have health rules. You must stay at a distance, wear a mask if asked, and be free of infectious illness.

Cost: How the Budgets Differ

  • Tanzania: You pay by the day. Our bands are $350–420 entry, $420–600 midrange and $600–1,200+ luxury per person, per day. Longer trips spread costs and add variety. See the safari cost guide.
  • Kenya: Similar daily bands. The Mara can cost more in peak months, and conservancy fees add to the price.
  • Uganda: A permit of $800 ($600 low season) plus lodging and transfers. Short trips can cost more per day than a Tanzania safari.
  • Rwanda: A $1,500 permit plus modest daily costs, over a short trip of 3–5 days.

Visas and Getting Between Countries

  • Each country has its own entry rules. Tanzania's visa does not work in Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda. Check the East Africa Tourist Visa and Kenya's electronic travel authorization for current details.
  • Arusha is a short drive from the Kenyan border, and regional flights link Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Entebbe, Kigali and Dar es Salaam.
  • Always confirm yellow fever rules for the route you plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tanzania or Kenya better for safari?
Neither is better overall. Tanzania offers bigger, quieter parks, Ngorongoro and Kilimanjaro. Kenya offers the Mara, Amboseli and easy flights. Many travelers combine both.
s Tanzania or Uganda better for wildlife?
Tanzania for savannah wildlife and the migration. Uganda for gorillas, chimps and birds. They give very different experiences.
Is Rwanda or Uganda better for gorilla trekking?
Rwanda is shorter, more polished and costs more ($1,500 permit). Uganda costs less ($800, or $600 in low season) and offers more variety. Both give you an hour with gorillas.
How much is a gorilla permit?
As checked in October 2026, $1,500 in Rwanda and $800 in Uganda ($600 in April, May and November). Confirm with the park authorities before booking, as prices change.
Can I see gorillas in Tanzania?
No. Mountain gorillas live in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. Tanzania offers chimpanzees at Mahale and Gombe.
Can I combine Tanzania with Rwanda or Uganda?
Yes. A safari in Tanzania followed by a flight to Kigali or Entebbe works well, usually over 10–12 days.
Which country is cheapest?
It depends on trip length. Gorilla trips carry a large fixed permit. Tanzania and Kenya safaris are priced per day, and entry-level options exist in both.
Which is best for a first safari?
Tanzania's northern circuit, or Kenya's Mara for a shorter trip.
Which country has the Great Migration?
Both Tanzania and Kenya. The herds move across the border, and the Mara River crossings take place roughly July to October.
Do I need separate visas?
es, you may need to check each country's rules. Check the East Africa Tourist Visa and Kenya's electronic travel authorization for current details.
