Think of Tanzania as five different trips. The Serengeti sits in one of them. If you have already been, or you want to see what else the country offers, this map shows you where to go next.
| Region | Highlights | Feel | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern (beyond Serengeti) | Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara, Arusha NP, Lake Natron, Empakaai | Classic and varied | Drive from Arusha |
| Kilimanjaro and highlands | Waterfalls, coffee farms, Chala, Usambara, Pare | Green and cultural | Drive from Moshi |
| Southern | Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi, Udzungwa, Kitulo | Quiet and wild | Road or short flight |
| Western | Katavi, Mahale, Gombe | Remote and rare | Flights, then boat |
| Coast and islands | Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, Saadani, Kilwa | Warm and slow | Flight or boat |
If You Have 4 Days
Stay close to Arusha. Try Ngorongoro and Tarangire, or Arusha National Park plus Lake Natron. Less driving means more time looking.
If You Have 7 Days
Pair one northern park with one extra place. For example, Tarangire and Ngorongoro, then Zanzibar. Or fly south to Nyerere and add a Zanzibar finish.
If You Have 10 Days
Go deeper in one region. A southern trip could link Mikumi, Udzungwa, Ruaha, and Nyerere. A western trip could link Katavi and Mahale. Each needs flights, so plan with care.
How to Choose Your Region
- Want few people and big skies? Southern parks.
- Want chimpanzees? Western parks.
- Want culture and walks? Kilimanjaro and the highlands.
- Want beach plus bush? Saadani or the coast.
- Want something easy? Stay in the north.
Be Honest About Trade-Offs
Beyond the Serengeti, there is often less infrastructure, more flights, and a higher cost per day. In return, you get quiet. If you are visiting Tanzania for the first time, the northern circuit still gives most people the best value.
