An immersive 4-day safari across Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
A 4-day safari across Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater offers an extraordinary view of wildlife, landscapes, and cultural highlights. With game drives across the Serengeti’s plains and a descent into the unique Ngorongoro Crater, each day promises encounters with Africa's iconic wildlife, from lions and elephants to rhinos and vast herds of antelope.
Begin your journey with a transfer to Serengeti National Park, either by a scenic drive through Tanzania countryside or by a short domestic flight directly into the park. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation before heading out for an introductory afternoon game drive. This initial drive offers sightings of grazing zebras, towering giraffes, and potentially even a lion or two relaxing in the grasslands. Wrap up the day with a sunset view over the plains, returning to your lodge or tented camp for an evening meal and overnight rest.
Start the day at dawn for a full day of game drives in the heart of the Serengeti. Early mornings are prime times to see the wildlife in action, including predators like lions and cheetahs hunting. You’ll also pass through areas abundant with elephants, wildebeests, and a variety of bird species. Enjoy lunch either at your accommodation or as a bush picnic in the park. The afternoon continues with more wildlife viewing, potentially in the Central Serengeti or tracking herds migrating if you're visiting during the Great Migration. Finish the day back at the lodge or camp.
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti before embarking on a scenic journey toward Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way, you may stop for cultural experiences with the Maasai, learning about their traditions and daily life. Reach Ngorongoro in the afternoon, where you’ll check in and relax with panoramic views of the crater. Prepare for an early start the next day to explore the cave floor.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning, navigating the steep descent to reach this unique ecosystem, which hosts an abundance of wildlife within its walls. Ngorongoro offers a chance to spot rare black rhinos along with hippos, flamingos at the central lake, buffalo, and more lions. The diversity of species in this concentrated area makes it one of the best safari destinations. After a few hours of exploration, enjoy a picnic lunch by the crater before ascending back to the rim in the early afternoon, where you'll prepare for your return journey.
In addition to clothing, include essentials such as a sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle. Comfortable, closed shoes are ideal for walking around camps or lodges.
Early mornings in Serengeti and Ngorongoro can be chilly, especially during certain seasons, while midday temperatures rise. A fleece jacket or sweater and a rain jacket will cover most weather conditions.
If you plan to take photos or videos, ensure you have extra batteries or a portable power bank. Some lodges offer charging stations but may have limited hours, so it’s best to come prepared.
Wild animals can be unpredictable, so always follow your guide’s instructions and maintain a safe distance. Avoid loud noises and sudden movements, and respect the animals' space.
Most areas of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro have limited cellular service. This is an opportunity to disconnect, so inform friends or family in advance and embrace the natural setting.
During game drives, silence or whispering is encouraged to avoid disturbing the animals and other safari-goers. Be considerate of other guests when viewing or photographing wildlife, and share space in the vehicles.
Long hours on game drives can be dehydrating, so keep water and light snacks with you. Check with your guide or tour provider if snacks are provided or if you should bring your own.
Tips are customary for guides, trackers, and lodge staff, especially if they provide exceptional service. Ask your tour operator about tipping norms in the area, or plan for $10–15 per person per day for guides.
