The Rongai Route Explorer – 7 Days Northern Trail is a unique Kilimanjaro climbing experience that approaches the mountain from the remote northern side near the Kenya border. Known for its low traffic and peaceful wilderness, this route is ideal for climbers seeking a quieter and more natural trekking experience.
With a gradual ascent and excellent acclimatization profile, the Rongai Route offers a higher summit success rate compared to busier routes. Trekkers enjoy diverse landscapes ranging from farmland and forest to alpine desert and glacial views. The descent via the Marangu Route provides added comfort and a complete perspective of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day itinerary is well-balanced for both first-time climbers and experienced hikers who want steady pacing, fewer crowds, and breathtaking northern scenery.After an early transfer to Rongai Gate (1,950m), registration is completed before the trek begins. The trail passes through farmland and pine forest, with chances to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys.
Overnight: Simba Camp (2,625m)
The hike continues through open moorland with wide views of the Kenyan plains. The gradual ascent helps the body adjust to altitude while enjoying peaceful surroundings.
Overnight: Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
The trail becomes steeper and more alpine as you approach Kikelewa Camp. The vegetation thins out, and the air becomes cooler and clearer.
Overnight: Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)
A short but steep climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro and perfect for acclimatization.
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m)
The trek crosses the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is vast and quiet, preparing climbers mentally and physically for summit night.
Overnight: Kibo Hut (4,720m)
Summit day begins around midnight. Climbers ascend slowly to Gilman’s Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, the descent continues to Horombo Hut.
Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)
The final descent passes through heathland and lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. After signing out, climbers receive certificates and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
