This 4-day budget camping safari in Tanzania is a pocket-friendly adventure through three of the most iconic northern circuit parks: Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Ideal for travelers seeking an immersive wildlife experience without breaking the bank, this itinerary offers game drives, camping under the stars, and guidance from experienced local safari experts. With daily meals, park fees, and transport included, it is one of the best value trips for spotting the Big Five and more.
Your adventure begins early in Arusha after breakfast. You'll meet your driver-guide and depart around 8:00 AM for a two-hour drive to Tarangire National Park. Famous for its large elephant population and ancient baobab trees, Tarangire also hosts lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeests, and hundreds of bird species. You'll enjoy a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park. In the late afternoon, head to a public campsite near Lake Manyara for dinner and an overnight stay in tents equipped with sleeping bags and mattresses. Basic shared facilities are available.
After breakfast at camp, drive toward Serengeti National Park via the lush highlands of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop briefly at the Ngorongoro viewpoint for a photo opportunity overlooking the crater. Descend into the endless plains of Serengeti, known for its abundant wildlife and the Great Migration (depending on the season). Enjoy an en-route game drive spotting lions, elephants, giraffes, and antelope along the way. You’ll arrive at Seronera campsite in central Serengeti by late afternoon. After pitching tents, enjoy dinner and overnight surrounded by the sounds of nature. Keep an eye out for nocturnal animals wandering near the camp’s unfenced perimeter.
Wake early for a sunrise game drive—your best chance to see predators like lions and hyenas on the hunt before the heat of the day. Return to camp for breakfast, then continue with another game drive toward the park’s exit gate. Enjoy lunch en route and begin your journey toward Ngorongoro, game-driving through the park as you go. Reach Simba Campsite on the crater rim in the late afternoon. The air is cooler here due to the altitude, and you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the crater below. After dinner, rest up for an exciting final day.
Wake up early and descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive. The crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day. You may see black rhinos, elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippos, and countless birds. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool and continue your game drive until midday. Ascend from the crater and return to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon. Drop-off can be at your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your onward plans.
Tents, foam mattresses, sleeping bags, and camping chairs are provided. You’ll camp in designated public campsites with shared toilet and shower facilities.
